You’ve been dealing with it for several months now – maybe even years. It’s a part of your life and who you are. It’s there, every day; unabated, unrelenting.

Maybe you know what caused the pain you feel, or maybe not. Either way, the possibility of your pain disappearing becomes less realistic. The people around you don’t understand. You feel resigned and, on bad days,  even hopeless.

You’re not alone. And know there’s hope.

As distant of a dream as it may seem, there are ways to manage the pain, allowing you to focus on the joys of life - beyond pain.

Do You Have Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain includes discomfort that lasts longer than three months. The pain is often linked to an underlying issue or combination of issues (not a specific cause). Some examples of chronic pain include arthritis, migraines, cancer, back pain, shingles, and fibromyalgia. So when trying to evaluate your pain, consider how long you’ve had it and if you know when or why it started.

So, You Have Chronic Pain – How Can You Manage It?

The truth is that there are so many different treatment options out there. From conventional pain medications (NSAIDs, acetaminophens, cox-2 inhibitors, etc.) to more natural coping methods (meditation, exercise, support groups, biofeedback, progressive muscle relaxation, and more), there are lots of ways you can try to relieve the effects of pain on your life.

Opioid medications are another option.  But they are the number one cause of prescription drug-related overdose deaths in America. For some people,  it only takes a few days to become heavily addicted. And, over time, the body tends to build up a tolerance to these drugs, which makes them a less effective option.

You could also try to find a pain management clinic that can help you cope with your chronic pain. There are typically two kinds of clinics: those that concentrate on specific kinds of pain, and interdisciplinary clinics that tackle pain from behavioral, physical, and psychological angles. This holistic approach often helps people function better and feel less pain.

However, one big drawback is that these clinics aren’t always conveniently located (having to drive into a large city for treatment can be more than a little disruptive). Additionally, because there aren’t very many of them, it can take a long time to get an initial appointment (sometimes up to years!).

Not having a migraine is pretty cool, because I've had those all my life...I haven't had one in 2 weeks! For me, that's a great improvement - Rachel (Lin member)
